The process involves collecting, cleaning, and processing the bottles into small flakes, which are then melted and formed into pellets or fibers. These RPET materials can be used to create a wide range of products, from clothing to packaging. RPET versus virgin polyester:

RPET stands for Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate. It is a type of plastic that is produced by recycling post-consumer PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) products such as plastic bottles and containers. RPET has gained popularity as a sustainable alternative to traditional PET plastics due to its environmentally friendly characteristics.

How is RPET made?

rPET(recycled polyethylene terephthalate) is produced through a process that involves collecting and sorting plastic bottles made of PET. The molten PET is extruded into thin strands, which are cooled and cut into small pellets, creating rPET resin. These pellets can be reprocessed and used to make various products such as textiles, packaging materials, and plastic containers. This recycling process reduces the demand for new petroleum-based plastics, helps divert plastic waste from landfills, and promotes a more sustainable approach to plastic production.

as a rough estimate, it is commonly stated that approximately 25 recycled PET bottles (500ml size) are needed to produce 1 kg of RPET. Using this estimate, we can make a calculation:

80g RPET ÷ 1000g/kg = 0.08 kg RPET
0.08 kg RPET × 25 bottles/kg = 2 bottles (approximately)
